Asthma / COPD

What is COPD?

COPD stands for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, a common lung condition that can make it hard to breathe. The condition takes two main forms: chronic bronchitis and emphysema.

Chronic bronchitis

Chronic bronchitis is inflamed bronchial tubes that either come and go frequently or never quite clear up. Heavy mucus, coughing, and labored breathing are common.

Emphysema

This condition occurs when the small air sacs within your lungs sustain damage. That creates larger spaces within your lungs, reducing their surface area and lessening the amount of oxygen able to enter your bloodstream.

Many people with COPD suffer symptoms of both chronic bronchitis and emphysema.

What is asthma?

Asthma is a chronic lung condition characterized by airway inflammation. This abnormal swelling causes your airways to narrow, leaving you less room to move air in and out.

Some people with asthma have only mild symptoms. For others, the condition can be life-threatening. An asthma attack is a bout of severe symptoms that requires immediate treatment.

Researchers are uncertain of the exact cause of asthma, but believe a combination of genetics and environmental factors may be to blame. Allergies are also linked to asthma, although not everyone who suffers from allergies will develop asthma. One theory holds that our modern lifestyle and high levels of sanitation have left our immune systems underutilized.

How are asthma and COPD diagnosed?

Dr. Ali begins every diagnostic visit with an in-depth discussion of your personal and family health history, as well as your current symptoms. The information gleaned during that portion of your visit helps Dr. Ali determine which screening tools are best suited for your needs.

Part of the diagnostic process involves ruling out other conditions that could be causing your breathing troubles. Dr. Ali might suggest various pulmonary function tests. Some options include:

  • Spirometry with bronchodilator test
  • Bronchoprovocation tests
  • Peak expiratory flow
  • Allergy testing
  • Chest X-ray
  • Bloodwork

Once an accurate diagnosis is reached, Dr. Ali creates a customized treatment plan. She’ll provide the details you need to make informed decisions about your care. When you’re ready to get started, call or schedule an appointment online.
